It is an enormous privilege for me to be leading the Medical School where I was myself a student 25 years ago.  I have been fortunate to have had  a fantastic preparation for this role; in having worked alongside the truly stellar Professor Jane Dacre for many years and then for an opportunity to ‘earn my spurs’ as Interim Director for eight months. I have great ambition for taking UCL Medical School from a great organisation to a truly exceptional one.

Over the last year I feel I have developed a quality understanding of both the context in which the Medical School operates and the significant opportunities to create a Medical School that is a beacon of excellence. Through working with the excellent senior leadership team and from really positive and thoughtful contributions from the whole Division in our INSET days we are beginning to create a strategic plan for what it means to be a truly exceptional Division over the next five years and beyond.  Our excellence needs to be not just in undergraduate medical education, but in education research, knowledge transfer and enterprise. We are developing a clear vision for the future: that places UCL Medical School in the number one position in national metrics whilst maintaining our strengths as a truly student-centred and patient-centred organisation; that delivers significantly enhanced research outputs and impacts through strategic partnerships; that extends the reach and profile of UCL Medical School in the rapidly transforming national and international medical education arena; and that ensures that enterprise is a core activity that maintains both the financial stability of the Division in a challenging higher education environment and that places knowledge transfer as central to what we do as an organisation.

I have also learnt that exceptional organisations are made up of exceptional people. The pool of talent amongst the professional services and academic staff is second to none and as I meet with a range of people both inside UCL and beyond, I am reminded daily that we have exceptional staff doing an exceptional job.

I am a really looking forward to the task.”
